Flooding 'increases claims on property insurance'
Recent severe flooding in Britain has resulted in an increase in property insurance claims, according to Abbey Home Insurance.
Some 8,600 property insurance claims were made due to flooding, storms and lightning, the firm's figures reveal.
Claims made up of flood damage accounted for 3,200 of the total, while storm damage was mentioned 5,100 times and lightning damage was blamed in 210 cases, the data states.
This figure stands in comparison with the estimated 13,700 property insurance claims due to flooding which Abbey says are made, on average, every year.
Prasad Shastri, head of insurance marketing at Abbey, said that the recent weather and resulting damage many homeowners by surprise.
"Although warnings were issued that there could be potential flooding, the scale of the damage has come as quite a shock," he said.
"Many people will be looking to make claims on their home insurance so it is advisable that everyone who would like to make a claim look into doing so as quickly as possible."
He added that a homeowner's insurance company should be able to offer advice about making a property insurance claim.
In related news, the BBC reported that RAF rescue helicopters rescued about 100 people in South Yorkshire from flooding.
